Six Principles of Mistake Proofing Care

This module addresses six major principles of mistake proofing:

  • Elimination
  • Replacement
  • Facilitation
  • Detection
  • Mitigation
  • Patient Involvement

Elimination, Replacement, and Facilitation are means of preventing mistakes from occurring.

Detection and Mitigation are means of minimizing effects of mistakes once they occur.

Patient involvement ties elements of both prevention and minimization, making it a very important aspect to develop.

We will cover each of these six principles in turn.
